OnePlus is set to launch its first foldable smartphone, likely to be called OnePlus Open, later this month. Ahead of the phone’s debut, rumours suggested that the OnePlus Open will be a rebranded version of the Oppo Find N3. The company has now confirmed the development saying OnePlus and Oppo are releasing the same foldable phone under different names.
It is noteworthy that both OnePlus and Oppo are owned by the same company, BBK Electronics. The OnePlus Open could be released on October 19.
According to an email from the company, Oppo chief product officer Peter Lau, who co-founded OnePlus, directed teams at both companies to develop the phone. The phones will be released under both brands in different markets, however, there is no information on the specific markets or regions where the respective phones will debut.
This is partially in line with rumours which claimed that the Oppo Find N3 will be a China-exclusive phone, while the OnePlus Open will be released in international markets.
The Oppo Find N2 remained a China-exclusive device while the Find N2 Flip went global. The Find N3 Flip is getting a global release, and it will launch in India as well.
Oppo Find N3 (OnePlus Open) expected specifications
Oppo Find N3 is said to sport a 6.31-inch cover display and a 7.82-inch AMOLED main panel. It may come with up to 24GB of RAM and up to 1TB of UFS 4.0 storage, and it may be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC.
The foldable phone may pack a 4,520mAh battery with support for 100W charging. When it comes to cameras, it could sport a 50MP primary sensor, a 48MP ultrawide shooter, and a 64MP periscope telephoto module. For selfies and video calls, the phone may come with a 32MP camera.
OnePlus has said that it developed 35 patents specifically tailored to the hinge. Compared to the hinge used in the Oppo Find N2, the hinge employed in the OnePlus foldable has 31 fewer components.
“Through careful material selection, we have managed to reduce both the size and weight of the hinge while enhancing its strength,” it said.
Apart from a lighter device, this has also brought improvements in material design and increased overall strength, the company said. The OnePlus foldable’s hinge is 37% smaller than its counterpart in the Find N2, it claimed.
