The smartphone market in India has reportedly seen growth after five straight quarters. According to a report by Canalys, the smartphone market saw a 20% year-on-year growth as brands shipped 38.9 million units in the fourth quarter (Q4) of 2023. However, in 2023, India’s smartphone market saw an overall minor drop of 2%.
As per the report, the market was able to show resilience due to improved consumer confidence in the latter part of the year.The report also noted that during most part of the year, vendors faced “inventory challenges, minimal inflation improvements and fluctuating demand.”
How different brands performed in Q4 2023
The report claims that Samsung was able to maintain its lead in the market as the South Korean tech giant has a 20% market share as it shipped 7.6 million units. Samsung was followed by Chinese smartphone makers Xiaomi and Vivo that shipped 7.2 million and seven million units, respectively. Meanwhile, Realme and Oppo (excluding OnePlus) took the fourth and the gift position by shipping 4.5 million and 3.7 million units, respectively.
How offline channels helped smartphone brands
Sanyam Chaurasia, senior analyst at Canalys said: “In 2023, growing investment in mainline retail space proved beneficial not only for vendors but also allowed the overall market to stabilise.”

The report noted that brands such as Xiaomi and Realme saw their highest offline shipment share in Q4 2023. Xiaomi became the highest offline channel contributor in this quarter as it offered its models equally to offline and online channels. The company’s Redmi 12 5G and the latest Redmi 13C series contributed to its offline share as each surpassed a million shipments.
Similarly, Realme also shipped devices with equal channel contribution. With the Narzo series driven by e-commerce, the remaining portfolio continued to dominate offline channels.
