Microsoft has announced the end of Android support in Windows 11. Back in 2021, when Microsoft announced Windows 11, the Android Subsystem was the headline feature that didn’t make the cut till much later. However, soon after rolling out the support, Microsoft has decided to put a pause on it and has confirmed that the Windows Subsystem for Android will be deprecated starting March 5, 2025 via the official support page.
“Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android™️ (WSA). As a result, the Amazon Appstore on Windows and all applications and games dependent on WSA will no longer be supported beginning March 5, 2025”, reads the official support page.
The company has also confirmed that users who have installed the Amazon Appstore or Android apps before March 5, 2024 can keep using till the depreciation date — March 5, 2025.
That said, starting March 6, Windows 11 can no longer download and install Android apps or the Amazon Appstore to download Android apps on their PC. Both Amazon Appstore and Android apps won’t be available via the Microsoft Store. Also, developers won’t be able submit Android apps to support Windows 11’s Android Subsystem.
If you are unaware, Android Subsystem for Windows was Microsoft’s answer to Apple’s iOS app support on Mac via the M1 chip. To facilitate the feature, Microsoft partnered with Amazon to bring onboard its Appstore to offer Android apps to Windows 11 users. The feature also allowed users to download the apps by downloading the apk file.
However, without the Google Play Service support, the overall experience was average. However, the move may also be result of the company’s recently developed focus on AI features and Copilot.
